This is the story of hi fi, not WiFi. A biography of a place and time. This is the story of that quintessential bastion of small town life- the shake and burger shack. Get the picture. We were young. The wind was at our back and we held the world firmly by the tail. Milkshakes, burgers and fries were the order of the day. We had our first kiss in the parking lot as a steady stream of 70’s rock oozed out of the outside speakers. After little league games we’d go for the island’s best soft serve ice cream, our dirty uniforms a badge of honor. Free milkshake for any kid who hit a homer. Small town living at its best. Each day a celebration of us. All of us. Most everyone knew each other on the island. And come Friday night, most everyone would find themselves at the local burger shack. Like monarchs on a southerly voyage, we came together bound by the promise of ice cream floats and chili dogs and onion rings. Bonds forged eternal over pinball and music and service with a smile. The old burger shack. Small town worldwide. Hey don’t get us wrong, modern life is pretty great. But as we scanned the island horizon recently we could no longer ignore the old building up on Mallory Street. We were left with no choice. It had to be Frosty’s Griddle & Shake. The sign lights up the Saint Simons Island sky like a neon clarion, beckoning all to come inside and find pure enjoyment and maybe even beat the high score at Pac Man. Here we rest. One foot in the past, one foot in the present. Something for everyone.
